Two grants to aid animal shelter

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — admin @ 1:34 am

SUBMITTED REPORT

Cats and dogs in San Marcos have an improved chance at better health with the receipt by the San Marcos Animal Shelter of a grant to fund immunizations for shelter cats and a state grant for a spay and neuter program.

The Animal Shelter, which serves San Marcos, Kyle and Hays County, will receive $7,500 from Petfinder.com Foundation to fund a feline herpesvirus, Feline calicivirus and Feline panlukopenia (FVRCP) vaccine program.

“This grant is expected to pay for vaccinations for as many as 2,000 cats that come through our shelter,” said Bert Stratemann, Animal Services Manager. “These are treatable illnesses and protecting cats at intake can reduce the chances of the diseases spreading through the facility and improve our ability to put them up for adoption.”

The Petfinder grant comes from its Care and Feeding fund made possible through online giving programs. The goal of the program is to reduce the number of homeless cats that are euthanized by reducing the outbreak of feline viruses.

In addition, the Animal Shelter has been notified that the City will receive a renewal of a $20,000 grant from the Texas Department of State Health Services for the shelter’s spay and neuter program.

The program assists low income residents in paying for spaying and neutering of their pets to prevent overpopulation and to reduce the number of abandoned cats and dogs. The state grant is funded through the Texas Animal Friendly License Plate program. The grant will take effect September 1 and the shelter will announce when vouchers become available.

The San Marcos Animal Shelter is located at 750 River Road in San Marcos. For more information on the programs, contact the shelter at 512-805-2650.

Bingo to benefit Vernon Animal Welfare League efforts

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — admin @ 11:51 pm

The Vernon Animal Welfare League is sponsoring a Beat the Heat Bingo at the VFW on Route 94 on July 31. The league came into being 35 years ago through the dedication and hard work of Valerie Palomba. Palomba, after many years as president, now serves as the league’s secretary. The current president Debbie VanderMaas explained that the shelter and the league are actually two separate entities that work together to achieve animal welfare in Vernon.

It’s amazing, the league has helped countless animals and people over its 35 year existence, VanderMaas commented. The league provides assistance when neutering and spaying dogs and cats, usually a discount when using area veterinarians from Vernon, McAfee and Hamburg.

Spaying and neutering is so important, VanderMaas said, not only for controlling populations but in the health of the pet by preventing numerous cancers.

A stunning statistic mentioned by VanderMaas was – One female cat and her offspring can produce 5,700 other felines in five years. Another sad situation is the number of feral cats due to uncontrolled breeding. VanderMaas has been a guardian angel to these cats by feeding them and trying to rehabilitate and tame them with the ultimate goal of adoption.

The Great Gorge condos are a notorious spot for cat abandonment, VanderMaas stated. She reminds people that NJ has a state ordinance which prosecutes those who abandon animals.

The July 31st bingo games begins at 7:15 pm with hot dogs, pizza, chips and soda available. The VFW is providing their building free of charge. Little Anothony’s is providing the pizza.

VanderMaas and her officers Angie Bates, Kerri Scott and Val Palomba, along with animal control officers Thomas Maellaro and Jack Stout hope they make a lot of money for the Vernon Animal Welfare League.

This year roughly 125 animals have been adopted into loving homes, VanderMaas said. However, the number of incoming animals never seems to lessen.

There’s so many more to help. The league and shelter are always in need of dog and cat food donations, bowls, treats, litter. toys, blankets and towels, but more importantly, the league and shelter are in dire need of volunteers and members who want to protect and care for homeless cats and dogs. The league welcomes interested new members on the first Thursday of every month at the Dorothy Henry library at 7 pm

Favoring Pets Over People

Filed under: Pets — Tags: — admin @ 7:14 pm

Roughly 75 people came together last week at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York, to hold a vigil for Canadian geese. Roughly 400 geese had been rounded up and killed after some had flown into the engines of US Airways Flight 1549 back in January 2009 — that was the famous plane that landed in the Hudson River.

Anyway, at this vigil, State Senator Eric L. Adams said, This cant happen again, in the middle of the night for the government to sneak in and be bigger than the people they represent. Many of the people there held pictures of geese with signs that read Why? and Rest in Peace, Geese.

Which I get. I like animals. Birds are cool when they dont crap on you.

But I gotta wonder: Would these people feel differently if they were dead due to one of these adorable geese? I think they would.

So here, once again, you have the misplaced priorities of those who favor pets over people.

We all get it: No one wants to kill anything. But life is full of tough decisions and if I had to choose between a grandmother and a goose, Id pick the one with the web feet the grandmother.

And as for the councilman who accuses the government of killing geese in the dead of night, remember thats pretty much how it works for your dinner. You dont get a free DVD with your veal chop showing you how the animal spent his last moments.

Boy, 8, accused of killing more pets

Filed under: Pets — Tags: — admin @ 2:40 pm

RCMP are investigating a report of animal cruelty in Stoneville, on Newfoundlands northeast coast. (Google Maps)

A central Newfoundland man says an eight-year-old boy, who admitted last month to RCMP that he beat a neighbours dog to death with a barbeque fork, has killed more animals.

Corey Hodder, of Stoneville, found several of the chickens and ducks he keeps as family pets bludgeoned to death Tuesday.

They got in my shed and there were shovels, a snow shovel, prongs, rakes, a sledgehammer and a level. Everything that was in my shed that they could get their hands on to throw at the birds — thats what they done, Hodder told CBC News Wednesday.

At least six birds were killed and five others were so badly injured that they cant walk.

Hodder notified the RCMP, and he said police interviewed the same eight-year-old boy who killed another Stoneville residents dog last month.

The 12-pound Pomeranian was found beaten to death on June 4 but no charges were laid. RCMP and Child, Youth and Family Services were addressing the incident because of the boys age.

After the latest animal killing, police again talked to the boy.

[Police] went in and were talking to this boy for about an hour, and at the last of it, he admitted he done it, Hodder said.

Bonnie Harris of the Gander SPCA has also been notified about the latest incident. She was also involved when the dog was killed, which she called the most disturbing case of animal cruelty she had ever seen.

Whats going to happen next? Not just for the SPCA, but for the community itself. Whats next? she asked.

Harris said some of the birds had to be put down because they were too injured to recover.

The RCMP said the investigation into the bird killings is continuing.

Lucky dog! Pets love the spa

Filed under: Pets — Tags: — admin @ 1:37 pm

Does your dog need a hydro massage? A carb-free diet regimen? A play date for the weekend? A dabba of home- cooked dog food that comes to the doorstep?

Theres all this and more for dogaholics in the city who want to pamper their four-legged companions. They could head to a dog spa, where canine massages are on offer, with soothing music playing through overhead speakers and aromatic candles flickering in softly-lit rooms. Or they could arrange a play date for their dogs and let them enjoy an afternoon of fun and frolic. As for an overweight dog, he or she might require a customised diet and a health farm experience to knock off the extra pounds.

At Shevar Spa and Grooming Centre for Pets, the oil massage for dogs is the most popular. Says Sherry Daroch who runs the centre with her husband Varun, My husband and I are dentists by profession and dog lovers by choice. We were so keen on working with dogs that we went to Singapore to do special courses on canine massage and grooming before launching our pet spa.

At Shevar, a spa treatment includes a 40-60 minute massage during which Sherry works on de-stressing the dogs. After the massage, the dogs are served coconut water, followed by a soothing hydro-bath. Finally, they go in for the regular grooming treatment which would include a blow dry, ear cleaning, nail clipping and hair-cut.

After the massage session, the pet owner is usually given a CD that will show them how the massage was done and how the dog reacted to it.

At another centre called Pets Stepin, dogs can be brought in for a play date. Says Pranjal Bonde, manager at the centre, I have seen really shy dogs come here, but by the time they are ready to go home, they are having a great time with other dogs. If a dog is ferocious, its kept separately. Pet Stepin also offers over-night stays, grooming, a puppy creche and a day-care service. The owner Dr Nezhat, who is also a vet, offers diet advice and has provisions for a short weight loss stint at the centre. The cost of treatments in most of these centres range from Rs400 to Rs 3,000 depending on the size of the dog and the procedures required. Many of them also take in cats, guinea pigs, parrots and other pets.

For home-cooked pet food and unique meal plans for dogs, Pets Dhaba in ISRO layout is the newest in the city. The meal plans at this centre are designed keeping a pets nutrition requirements in mind. For example, a vegetarian meal plan would have the right mix of cereals, vegetables, fruits and nuts, milk and oils (for coat conditioning), while non-vegetarian meal plans would include chicken and cereals, vegetables, fruits and nuts. Says Shubha Kutty who runs the centre, We also have premium meal plans which include salads like macaroni salad or sprouts. On weekends, I send out foods like idli and chicken stew. Each meal plan is created in accordance with the needs of the dogs specified by owners and we send the food to their homes every morning.

Polk Accepts Animals Without Charge; Don’t Abandon Pets to Wild

Filed under: Pets — Tags: — admin @ 12:49 pm

The Polk County Sheriffs Office Animal Control Shelter is a public county shelter that accepts all animals brought to its facility at no charge.

Also, turning pets loose into the world with the hope they can survive is not a humane option. These abandoned pets are confused and totally unable to survive without human intervention. Most will die within 90 days of starvation or illnesses brought on by the stressful conditions to which they are subjected.

Please, if you find yourself in the position where you can no longer keep your pet, take it to a shelter. Choosing between a county-run and a private shelter is up to the individual owner.

Call ahead to a private shelter or rescue organization to find out what its policies are regarding surrendered pets and costs.

Please, the right thing to do is to take your pet to a shelter rather than abandoning it to fend for itself.
